Winners of the balloon fest pilots contest
Beautiful weather prevailed all weekend for the Lincoln Art & Balloon Festival, allowing
balloon pilots every opportunity to launch. Scheduled flights took place Friday evening,
Saturday morning and evening, and again Sunday morning. Plus, a number of the balloons
returned to the field to glow for crowds on Friday and Saturday evening.
Preliminary numbers on visitors at the airport indicate that Saturday was a record crowd,
estimated to be about 13,000 people, with many of those being from out of town.
Jim Phelan, the balloon meister, announced the pilots winning the top five places at the festival.
Pilots toss bags at a target laid out at the airport and accumulate points all weekend.
