POSTVILLE COURTHOUSE
Costume Ladies to
perform Sunday at
1800s Craft Fair
Crafters in period costume will gather on the grounds
of the historic Postville Courthouse State Historic Site
on Sunday for the annual 1800s Craft Fair.
The free, family-oriented event will offer
demonstrations of phrenology, kachina doll making,
chair making, coopering and other woodworking
skills, herbal arts, and fiber arts such as spinning,
weaving and silk ribbon embroidery.
The Costume Ladies will present programs on the first
floor of the courthouse at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. The
first floor is handicapped-accessible.
During the morning program, the women will
show how a Civil War woman might have taken an
“everyday” dress and transformed it into an evening
gown, using the materials she had on hand.
At 2 p.m., they will present a skit, “The Two Marys.”
One woman will portray Mary Todd Lincoln, wife
of the 16th president, and the other will take on the
persona of Mary Surratt, who was hanged for plotting
against Mr. Lincoln.
Abraham and Mary Lincoln, portrayed by Gary and
Carol Simpkins, will mingle with guests.
Tours of Postville Courthouse will also be offered.
Period music will be played on the grounds throughout
the day.
Face painting will be offered for children.
Food will be available for purchase from the Lincoln
Kiwanis Club, and some of the crafters will offer their
wares for sale.
The event will take place from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Sunday at the courthouse at 914 Fifth St.
The 1800s Craft Fair is co-sponsored by Postville
Courthouse State Historic Site, Lincoln’s Logan
County Arts and Crafts Guild, and the Abraham
Lincoln Tourism Bureau of Logan County. For more
