Page 24 2026 Fall Farm Outlook Lincoln Daily News Oct 2026 Pork remains steady at around 50 pounds per person per year. When beef prices spike, fast food restaurants shift to promoting chicken, turkey, or pork products to protect their margins, and grocery store consumers often shift to ground pork, turkey, or chicken for casual weeknight meals, but rarely give up a steak for a special occasion. The American beef industry is at a crucial intersection pressured by biological limits, high market demand, and federal government regulations. America’s ranchers face years of obstacles, including droughts and rising operating costs. These obstacles have forced a drop in the number of cattle ranches in America, adding to market pressure. Because of the biological constraints of raising cattle, inventories will require at least three to four years to recover; therefore, consumers are unlikely to see relief any time soon. To complicate matters further, the federal government steps in with policies that make the market environment even more uncertain for ranchers. Ranchers and consumers will continue to experience uncertainty regarding beef until the American herd has time to recover.
