Department O judging - CANDIES SNACKS AND CAKES
O
n Friday morning at the Logan County Fair, the
Department O judging took place with entries for
the categories of Candy, Snack Foods, no-bake treats,
pretzel treats, and Cakes.
Department O superintendents are Jena and Nancy Reed,
and Mary Ellen Martin. There were also several young
helpers on standby who shuffled entries to the judge, then
placed the top winners in the class cases where they will
remain ondisplay through Sunday.
This year the judge for the competition was Rose York-
Lazzeri. Rose is a native of Texas and earned her degree
in Home Economics at Texas Tech. She has lived in the New Berlin area for more than 20 years and has
judged multiple years at the Logan County Fair, alternating between the Wednesday baking and preserving
competition, and the Friday cakes and candies categories.
On Friday she had some very tough choices to make, especially when it came down to the cakes that would
produce winners who will vie for a title on Sunday at the Cake Classic. The most popular flavor of the day
appeared to be the chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. Between the youth and the adult categories, Rose
had to sample and choose two winners, one in each age level from a total of seven cakes.
Other tough choices included several bags of trail mix, and a very large selection in the no-bake treats
category.
