4-H
Exhibitors present flowers, herbs and potted plants
On Monday, 4-H exhibitors presented flowers, herbs
and potted plants. Judge Betty Moser from Decatur
brought smiles from every youth during their one-on-
one interactions. She queried each on their knowl-
edge of the flower or plant that they had submitted
and later provided tips to all, such as there should be
no foliage in contact with vase water; that promotes
deterioration.
Keeping the show running smoothly were longtime
supporters of 4-H and the Logan County Fair activi-
ties, the Steffens family.
Betty and Larry Steffens farmed, as well as raised all
their own food for many years to feed their family of
eight children. They also raised their kids in 4-H.
The senior Steffens couple had been in charge of the
horticultural program for 25 years and still serve as
superintendents. But son Jason has taken over the
primary work. And, he’s been doing it for 17 years
now. With a smile and happy tone, Jason narrated,
introducing Moser and calling forward each of the
participants as their turn came. The morning went
smooth as can be and swiftly.
Advanced communication technology made its way
into the local presentations this year. Grace Skelton
incorporated a QR code in her display on basil. When
this was recognized, Moser surprised a few people by
promptly retrieving her iPhone to scan it. The scan
immediately brought up detailed information on the
herb.
Skelton took home the trophy for the day.
