T
he first stop of the evening was at the United Methodist
Church with pastor Rachel Stockle and several members of the
congregation offering up information about the building itself.
In 1836, the Methodist Society of Mt. Pulaski, the first religious
organization in our town, was held in the home of Dr. John Clark and
the village school. In 1851, a new church was built on the comer of
Jefferson and Vine streets. Due to the Illinois Central tank car explosion
in 1958, the church was extensively damaged and the stained glass
windows were
destroyed. It was
voted to rebuild
and the work
was done by
volunteers of the
church.
Today, this
beautiful stone
structure still
stands on the
original site.
The history
of the church is depicted in the stain glass windows at the front of the
sanctuary. The church is always beautifully decorated for Christmas
and the lovely Chrismons on the tree were hand made by ladies of the
church many years ago.
The choir, under the direction of Claus Tanner, presents Sunday
anthems to the congregation. Beth Myrick Anderson assists on the
piano. Each year a beautiful Christmas Cantata is presented.
After visiting the sanctuary, visitors were invited to the fellowship hall
for a wide array of Christmas cookies and coffee.
