Understand
your limitations!
One
of the hardest things for do-it-yourselfers to accept is that they
aren’t good at everything. Everyone has special talents but few of
us are good at everything and there are some things that should be
left to professionals.
Changing or adding an outlet in the kitchen is one
thing. Putting in a new electric service is another. Changing
faucets or replacing a toilet is something many of us can do but
running new pipes and rough plumbing an addition might be over our
heads. Heating and cooling also are not jobs for a novice with a
how-to book to learn a new trade. Perhaps you are an excellent
painter but that second story paint area with a porch roof in the
way means you might have to put life and limb on the line or buy the
expensive equipment a professional painting company has.
Some home’s roofing is easy to repair or replace. In
other cases, height and pitch make for a dangerous job and it is
important to factor in personal safety over savings when doing a
roof or any of the previously mentioned jobs.
There is something special about doing that job yourself and doing
it well. Some things however are best left to insured professionals
who are as comfortable doing those tough jobs as you are with those
other jobs that you can do so well.
There is a reason contractors have specialty fields. They are good
at doing what they do and they usually hire others to do other tasks
for them on their own homes.
You should use the same frame of mind as you make
your house just the way you want it. You not only want it to look
great. You want it to be right. [Mike Fak] |
