2026 Museum of Rt. 66

Page 64 Museum of Route 66 Lincoln Daily News June/July 2026 Friday, July 10, just in time for the Museum of Route 66 grand opening on Saturday, July 11, a new 12-foot-tall fiberglass “Lincoln penny” roadside attraction that features a stamped Route 66 shield and the year 2026 was installed on a concrete base outside the museum. Because it was so large, the penny was hooked up to both a cherry picker and backhoe to lift it and set it into place on the base. Once the penny was hooked up to the machines, those operating the cherry picker and backhoe worked together and slowly moved the penny into place. The penny will provide a good photo opportunity for Route 66 travellers. Artist Mark Cline spent months creating the penny section by section. He used metallic paint to make it look like a penny then stamped Route 66 and 2026 in the bottom right corner. Cline also created the Lincoln donut and several other giants on Route 66 plus made a mold of himself, which is displayed in the museum. [Angela Reiners] Big Change comes to the Museum of Route 66
