In Christmas 1911, Lincoln Daily Courier tells of the Lincoln Woman’s Club distributing food baskets to families. They described that Christmas as “the most blessed yet seen in this city, for a hundred hovels of the poor were made to ring with merry laughter by the visits of kind messengers who left a great big Christmas dinner behind.” In these homes, the children “danced about when messengers of a charitable organization arrived and deposited a big basket, filled with fruit, candy, nuts and chicken.” Christmas has undergone some changes over the years as culture has changed. However, Childs said, “despite the shifts, the underlying spirit of Christmas — a time of love, generosity, and togetherness — remained steadfast, transcending the changing times and shaping the holiday as we know it today.” Angela Reiners Sources: Christmases Long, Long Ago: The Evolution of Christmas in the 19th and 20th Centuries – Democracy and Me Discover 19TH CENTURY HOLIDAY TRADITIONS & CUSTOMS!
