Page 286 Lincoln Daily News 2025 Logan County Fair Jul/Aug 2025 Herbs and Floral Displays at Friday’s Floriculture Gardeners arrived at the fair again Friday morning with fresh fl owers, herbs, and potted plants for the second day of Floriculture competition. Friday’s contest added a Junior Division and featured two Challenge Classes in addition to divisions in Potted Plants, Cut Flowers, Arrangements, Herbs, and Herb Arrangements. Potted plant categories varied from outdoor fl owering plants such as begonias and geraniums to house plants and ferns. Cut Flowers off ered an opportunity to repeat a handful of categories from Tuesday’s Floriculture event or bring new contenders such as cockscomb or collections of pollinators (fl owers friendly to bees, butterfl ies, or hummingbirds).The Junior Division was open to young people age 17 and under with cut fl ower annuals and perennials as well as two options for arrangements. Arrangements for Friday’s competition encompassed the theme “Floral Tributes” with seven design categories to choose from including patriotic colors and a miniature design. Friday also featured a wide selection of culinary herbs to be shown without blooms– potentially challenging for growers after the summer solstice when days begin to grow shorter and many herbs want to begin to fl ower and set seed. The theme for the fi nal division, Herb Arrangements, was “Herbal Frenzy ” with three categories to showcase collections of fresh culinary herbs. After judging completed on Friday, ribbons and points were totaled from both days of Floriculture competition to determine the Champion Exhibitor of Logan County and the Sweepstakes Award.
