O - Culinary and Dairy Judging at the Logan County Fair On Wednesday, July 30th, an open judging was held for the Department O culinary entries. There were many different categories being judged, from decorated cakes to cookies and even canned goods. The judging kicked off around 10:00 a.m. and went well into the afternoon. Due to the extraordinarily large number of entries last year, it was decided that there would be two judges this year so that a single judge would not get overwhelmed. Rose Harrold returned to judge again, but this year just in the afternoon. Lincoln Memorial Hospital Farmers Market Coordinator Jamie Jones was the morning judge. The Department O Superintendents were Marcia Greenslate and Janet Estill. Greenslate shared that there were less entries this year than last, but that it was still a good turn out. She also shared that the number of entries last year was way higher than average. Jones started off by judging the decorated cakes on their looks before moving on to pies and other types of baked goods. For the goods Jones did eat (which was everything beside the cakes), she took her time considering the taste of each one before making notes on which baked good placed where for each category. She also had a glass of water to act as a pallet cleanser between bites. The bites Jones took were very small as she had well over one hundred items to try. Jones and Harrold had a well-oiled machine of a team around her keeping things moving as they tasted and judged. Sarah Dahmm, Olivia Wrage, Jaydon Miller, and Tucker Roate worked together getting baked goods to the table to be judged. They also unwrapped the baked goods from their packaging, put them back when they were finished, and displayed the items once they had a ribbon. Once the judge finished judging a class, Linda McCuan would write the names of the individuals who submitted the baked goods on a card next to where they placed. McCuan would then hand the card off to Ron Estill, who announced the winners to those who were present for the judging. Continued --
