Page 23 2022 Home For The Holidays Lincoln Daily News November 23, 2022 From Jeff Wyles When one of the LDN graphic artists chose to retire at the end of 2021, it left a gap that needed to be filled. While Devyn Fry was taking on more responsibility, she was not able to fit all the work into her schedule and still attend college. Thus, LDN went looking for another person for the office, and Jeff Wyles answered that call, responding to an employment ad in Lincoln Daily News. It was obvious right away that Jeff had talents and abilities that were very desirable for an online news source. He displayed knowledge of “code, color, and layout” that put him way ahead of any other candidate. When he was offered the part time position, he took it and since that time has displayed his willingness to do whatever he can to make LDN a better publication. He is always willing to take on more responsibility and has in his short time with LDN become an invaluable member of our team. A note from Jeff about a family favorite holiday candy When staff were discussing the theme for the 2022 Home for the Holidays magazine, it brought to mind a favorite recipe for Divinity. Jeff said his Great Aunt Helen made the best divinity ever. He said she did share her recipe, but others tried and failed to make the same great taste and texture that his Aunt Helen did. Jeff’s mom was able to find the recipe but it comes with an asterisk. *GOOD LUCK! Divinity 2 ½ Cups Granulated White Sugar 2/3 Cup White Corn Syrup 1/2 Cup Cold Water 1/4 Tsp salt 2 Egg Whites (room temperature) 1/2 Cup Chopped Nuts 1/2 Tsp of vanilla or almond extract Instructions: Cook sugar, corn syrup, water and salt covered on medium heat for 3 minutes. Stir and cook on high for 2 minutes. Cook uncovered, without stirring, for an additional 12 minutes. Let stand. In a large bowl beat the egg whites. Beat the whites until they are as stiff as possible. Slowly pour in the cooked mixture and vanilla/ almond extract while continuing to beat the mixture together. The better the whites are beaten the nicer the candy will be. Beat until mixture looks “glossy”. Mix in nuts. Let stand and firm. Continued —
