Judging the cakes was Elizabeth (Carter) Wright, who used to participate in the cake classic. Wright received top prize for her spice cake at the 2011 Cake Classic. Before the cakes were auctioned off, Cake Classic Superintendent Rebekah Johnson thanked several sponsors. These included McEntire’s Home Appliance and TV, who supplied the ovens; Peggy’s Place, who supplied the boxes; Darlene Begolka, who donated Tupperware; and Action Jackson Lawncare, who sponsored participation awards. At the auction, the seven cakes auctioned by Mike Maske raised a total of $6,400. As in past years, this entire amount will go directly to the Logan County 4-H to support programs throughout the year. After the results of the Cake Classic judging were announced, each winner brought his or her cake up to be auctioned by Maske. Maske asked each baker to describe the cake and hold it up for the audience to see during the bidding. Once each cake was auctioned, the baker posed for a photo with the buyer plus Logan County Fair Queen Emma Stoltzenburg, Junior Miss Isabella Pollice and Little Miss Luci Bobell. Jim Xamis was the top bidder for the first- place cake, with a bid of $1,500. Continuing a tradition he started a few years ago, Xamis said he wanted to donate the cake to be sold again in memory of Harold Goodman and raise even more money for the 4-H foundation. The top bidder this time was Harold Goodman’s son, Stacy Goodman, with a bid of $1,200. Top four cakes: First place: Gail Ubbenga - White Butter Cake. Ubbenga said, “It is one I had not made before.” Something Ubbenga found interesting was that it required 12 egg whites. Continued p
