In this holiday season 2013, we here in
Lincoln find ourselves in various stanzas
of the “Christmas Bells” poem. For some,
our world is familiar, comfortable and
sublime. For others, troubles and difficul-
ties drown out the carols and bow our
heads in despair.
Like Longfellow, though, the story of
Lincoln, Ill., and the stories of each of our
worlds are still being written. In the midst
of the sublime and in the midst of de-
spair, hope lives on. We have good days
and bad; we have triumphs and sorrows;
we have joy and anguish; but we always
have hope.
Hope. It’s a good word. Use it a lot. (And
listen for your bells!)
