Because there is no baking involved, it is fairly easy to make. When our son Jesse visits during the holidays, he likes to make a big batch of puppy chow. Over the years, it has become something of a tradition to make puppy chow and share it with family and friends. Puppy Chow (aka muddy buddies) 1 Cup Semisweet Chocolate Chips ½ Cup Creamy Peanut Butter ¼ Cup Unsalted Butter 1 Tsp Vanilla Extract 6 Cups Chex Rice Cereal 1½ to 2 Cups Powdered Sugar Instructions: Place the chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter in a medium microwave safe bowl and microwave on high for one minute. Remove the bowl from the microwave and stir. Place the bowl back in the microwave and heat for an additional 30 seconds or until the mixture is smooth when stirred. Add the vanilla extract and stir again. Pour the cereal into a large mixing bowl. Add the chocolate and peanut butter mixture and gently stir until the cereal is evenly coated. Pour the coated cereal into a large Ziploc bag or large paper bag and add the powdered sugar. Seal the bag and shake until the cereal is coated with powdered sugar. Let sit until cool and chocolate is set. Store the puppy chow in an airtight container for up to two weeks. If your kitchen is warm, store it in the refrigerator. From John Fulton Many folks will know John from his time with the Logan County Extension Office in Lincoln. While he was the Ag Advisor at the extension, he wrote weekly columns that were distributed to all local media. He was also a mainstay at the Logan County Fair each year, overseeing the livestock barns and assisting 4-Hers on show days. For years, John has been LDN’s personal advisor on our Spring and Fall Farm Outlook magazines. His up-to-date knowledge of what is going on in the ag industry as been invaluable to production staff during those planning sessions. John and wife Sherri are both retired now and enjoying the good life that comes with that. They raised three boys and are quite proud of them for who they are and what they are doing in their adult lives. A note from John about a family favorite holiday recipe This was a particular favorite of our three boys around the holidays. It is relatively easy to make, no-bake, and colorful.
